Martin Lawson, School of Divinity '14

Reverend Lawson accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord in Savoir in 1988 and God began the process of transforming “Marty,” a lost, confused, young man, into Reverend Martin L. Lawson, a devoted and mature man of God with vision, purpose, and direction. Through numerous life experiences “Marty” eventually grew to understand how essential it was for him to have a loving, and intimate, relationship with God Almighty which led him to rededicate his life to Christ in 1998 and begin to seek God’s plan for his life.

 Reverend Lawson was ordained as a deacon in 2003 as a member of Mount Calvary Christian Center under Pastor Reggie C. Witherspoon. In 2006 he discerned his ministerial calling and committed his life to the service of God through Jesus Christ. In 2007 Reverend Lawson was licensed to preach by Pastor Jimmie Jordan of Righteous Fellowship; he then passed his Ordination Board Examination on November 9th 2010, under the tutelage and facilitation of Reverend Aaron Williams, Senior Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

 Reverend Martin L. Lawson completed the requirements for his Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies/ with Departmental Honors at Seattle University and graduated Cum Laude in June of 2011. In the fall of 2011 Reverend Lawson began his studies at Wake Forest University School of Divinity as a Wait Scholar. He is currently studying for his Masters of Divinity degree while serving as the Graduate Hall Director for the Luter Residence Hall.

 While attending Wake Forest Reverend Lawson plans to continue working in various capacities within the local church while serving in the community as a volunteer advocate and activist with a major focus on youth development.

 Reverend Lawson is happily married to Meko, his beautiful and loving wife of thirteen years and together they celebrate the gift of three children, Malia, Milan, and Maiz Imani, and two grandchildren Makiya and Mika.

 One of Reverend Lawson’s favorite scriptures is found in Luke 4:18-19;

 18 THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, FOR HE HAS ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR; HE HAS SENT ME TO HEAL THE BROKEN HEARTED, TO PREACH DELIVERANCE TO THE CAPTIVES AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET AT LIBERTY THEM THAT ARE BRUISED;

19 TO PREACH THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.
